Client & Business Challenges
RTI International, a prominent nonprofit research institute focused on global environmental improvements, needed to address rising waste generation through a modernized decision-support framework. Their legacy desktop-based application restricted availability, lacked a streamlined user interface, and created data silos that hampered real-time collaboration. As environmental regulations grew stricter, the existing system could not easily adapt to evolving standards, limiting its potential for widespread impact. The organization required a cost-effective, scalable approach that met compliance with local waste management rules while remaining user-friendly for a broad audience. By embracing a web-based redesign, RTI International sought to accelerate data-driven decisions, optimize resource allocation, and provide round-the-clock remote access for users.

The Solution
Working closely with RTI International’s team, we transitioned the aging desktop application into a fully web-based MSW DST using ASP.NET for stable, high-performance backend processes. This migration replaced VB.NET, significantly improving speed and scalability. We leveraged an open-source web framework for the UI and modernized the front end with jQuery, HTML, and JavaScript to deliver a responsive, intuitive interface. By centralizing data and automating processes such as resource allocation and waste analytics, we enabled round-the-clock usage from any device. This holistic redesign minimized manual interventions, ensuring consistent compliance with local waste regulations, and positioned RTI International’s software as a flexible, globally applicable tool for managing municipal solid waste.

- Backend Modernization
We reengineered the VB.NET code to ASP.NET, boosting performance and stability. Adding C# and Microsoft Office Interop automated back-office tasks and unified data processing. These enhancements eliminated manual overhead, allowing RTI International’s team to quickly incorporate new waste management rules and scale resources as usage demands grew.
- Responsive Front End
By adopting jQuery, HTML, and JavaScript, we built an intuitive user interface that delivers critical data in real time. This responsive design let stakeholders access the MSW DST on any device, eliminating location-based restrictions. The dynamic dashboard also provided consolidated views of disposal options, cost factors, and compliance status.
- Centralized Data Access
A newly consolidated data repository ensured that all stakeholders saw up-to-date, consistent information around the clock. We automated data imports, validated records, and stored them securely, allowing municipal leaders to make informed decisions faster. This centralization significantly reduced the risk of conflicting data sources and simplified global collaboration.
